Paso Robles is the county's best-known appellation, and it has grown quickly. When it was established in 1983 it had about 17 wineries and 5,000 vineyard acres, with Zinfandel as the heritage grape. Today it is reported to have more than 200 wineries and roughly 40,000 vineyard acres, and it is about three times the size of Napa. About 95 percent of its wineries are family owned.
The variety list is unusually wide. More than 40 varieties are grown, including Cabernet Sauvignon (the most widely planted), Zinfandel, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Petite Sirah, Chardonnay and a long list of Rhone and Italian varieties. Cooler coastal parts of the county, such as Edna Valley, are known for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
